Ambassadorial Scholar Interviews 8-21-10

HISTORY MADE!

Long story short, as long as D5520 has been involved with the program, 99% of the time, one scholar is sent.  15 years ago, 2 were sent.  This year, D5520 selected THREE (3) scholars for the $26k award or $78k invested in the international educations of these future Rotarians lives!

The experience can be summed up by a quote from selection committee member Michelle Frechette "The magic created in the last 24 hours by the commitment of this district to the potential in our youth is absolutely amazing. Riding home with one of the most excited young ladies in the district was a true pleasure. I was shocked and so pleased to hear that our leadership sat back, thought about our options and then worked outside the box of the 'usual process'. Boy, this life experience called Rotary just gets better every single day"

Amb Scholar Friday night pre-game social 8-20-10

We had the Ambassadorial Scholar social event at the home of Justin Ellis in Roswell.  4 candidates were able to make it.  Really learned a lot about them and had a great time talking Rotary.

O.V. #22 RC of Santa Fe 8-19-10

A club steeped in tradition and blending multiple generations into a dynamic group, President Helen 'gets it' and I really appreciate what her and her board are trying to do.  Lots of great people and worthy of a make up!  Great Nambe btw and I thank you all for the great hospitality and encouragement!

O.V. #21 RC of ABQ del Sol 8-19-10

Great energetic morning club.  President Bill brought his two young boys for the meeting and it was great to see so many past and present Rotary leaders involved with this club.  Really a club making things happen and on the verge of some great growth (they introduced many guests as part of their club meeting).

RC of ABQ Sandia Chartering Ceremony 8-17-10

It was an honor to install President Mollie and Board.  A great turn out to welcoming club number 70 to D5520!

O.V. #20 RC of ABQ Rio Grande 8-17-10

President Rob was really accommodating.  This club has a great energy about it.  They recently raised over $55k on their golf tournament and the group seems to be pretty tight.  The Nambe was really neat!  Thank you all!

O.V. #19 RC of Santa Fe Centro 8-17-10

7am at the Hotel Plaza Real.  Really historic building and great venue.  President Steve was away, and PE Susanne did a great job filling in.  The group was very fun and attentive for an early morning group.

8-16-2010 Oppenheimer Memorial Lecture Los Alamos

In build up to visits this week, I drove to Los Alamos to hear the Oppenheimer lecture (40th year).  The drive to Los Alamos from Santa Fe was pretty fantastic, the views were something I have never seen before in NM.  Numerous bluffs/plateaus and great skyline.

The lecture was by Dr. Ahmed Zewail, Nobel Prize (1999) for his work in femtoscience (phenomena that occur on the scale of a femtosecond or one millionth of a billionth of a second).  He is the developer of the 4D electron microscope (4D as in time).  It was very interesting to be in a room filled with some of the smartest people in the US let alone the world.

RC Ruidoso Co-Sponsor reception for UNM Football Team

Very cool invite.  The Village of Ruidoso through the efforts of Rotarian Katie Kmetz and others helped bring the UNM Football program training camp to Ruidoso.  This is the third initiative/event that I have witnessed Katie Kmetz direct.  She, as always, knocks it out of the park.  It was really exciting to see all of the families, children, and UNM Football fans gather at the Lodge at Sierra Blanca for a huge reception. There was free bbq for all attendees.

This was also the second time in the past three months that I was able to have conversation with Head Coach Mike Locksley.  I think he is a very approachable and personable guy.  He and his wife Kia are very down to earth and easy to talk to.  It was nice to see him directing all of the fans that would come up to him to the rest of the team who were all willing to take a minute to sign the team poster.  I was very impressed with Locksley and his staff.

I also got to spend some time speaking with the 'Voice of the Lobos' Scott Galetti.
